Working as a make-up artist

Make-up artists must know how to apply make-up for different skin tones, for different events, and for purposes of creating special effects. Make-up application and skincare go hand-in-hand. A make-up artist should have comprehensive knowledge of skincare.

Useful tips for skincare include the following:

  • Apply a facial mask once or twice a week.
  • Always remove make-up at the end of the day.
  • Do not share your make-up with other people.
  • Wash your face twice a day.
  • Always wear sunscreen, even in winter or when it is cloudy.
  • Try to detox once a month.
  • Drink at least 2 litres of water a day.

A make-up artist will make use of various beauty products to create a certain look for a specific purpose. His or her clients may include brides, models, actors and actresses. He or she should therefore know how to create different looks for different occasions.

Where can I study to become a make-up artist?

The Learning Group’s range of beauty courses includes a number of make-up application courses. All of the courses are offered via distance learning. Studying one of these courses may not guarantee you a make-up artistry job, but the course you choose will enrich you with knowledge about the beauty industry in general and make-up application in particular.

During your make-up application training, you should start putting together a portfolio of photos of the work you have done. Preferably, your portfolio should include different types of make-up application. This will allow prospective clients to get a feel for your style and your abilities.
