What Are Matric Pass Requirements?

To pass matric, you need to achieve one of the following four levels of achievement. Each level has its own set of requirements and opportunities.

National Senior Certificate Pass

The National Senior Certificate Pass is the standard pass for matric. It allows you to apply for any tertiary course that only requires you to have a matric certificate. To secure this certificate, you need to achieve the following minimum marks:

  • 40% in your Home Language

While it is not encouraged, aiming for just a National Senior Certificate leaves room to fail one subject. Remember, the higher you aim, the further you will go.

Higher Certificate Pass

The Higher Certificate Pass is one step up the ladder of achievements. Achieving this means you could study any Higher Certificate course at institutions of higher learning. Here are the minimum marks you need to achieve:

  • 40% in your Home Language
  • 40% in two other subjects
  • 30% in four other subjects

For this one, you have to pass at least 6 out of 7 subjects.

Diploma Pass

The Diploma Pass is the next level of achievement. Once you have obtained this achievement, you can study a Diploma course at any tertiary institution offering them. Here are the minimum marks you need to achieve:

  • 40% in your Home Language
  • 40% in four other subjects
  • 30% in two other subjects

Bachelor’s Pass

The Bachelor’s Pass is the highest level of achievement. Obtaining this can get you admission to pursue a degree at University. Here are the minimum marks you need to achieve to get into your chosen major:

  • 40% in your Home Language
  • 50% in four subjects
  • 30% in two other subjects

What Can I Do If I Am Unsatisfied With My Matric Result?

If you are not happy with your Matric results, don’t worry! There are several strategies available to turn this around, each opening a new doorway to the success you envision.

Matric Rewrite

A Matric Rewrite is an opportunity to sit for the entire Matric exam again, or just specific subjects, typically in the subsequent year. It is an excellent choice for those seeking to comprehensively improve their scores. The process involves:

  1. Registration: Enroll for the Matric Rewrite.
  2. Preparation: Immerse yourself in a rigorous study plan, considering the support of tutors or supplementary classes.
  3. Examination: Participate in the exams during the allocated rewrite period.
  4. Results: Obtain your revised Matric results, which will supersede your previous ones.

Matric Upgrade

Opting for a Matric Upgrade allows you to better your results by retaking one or more subjects, without repeating the entire Matric year. This option suits students who are generally pleased with their overall results but aspire to elevate their performance in specific areas. The process involves:

  1. Subject Selection: Select the subjects you aim to improve.
  2. Registration: Register for these subjects via an educational body or the education department.
  3. Study and Preparation: Engage in focused study for your chosen subjects, utilizing a variety of resources like textbooks, online content, or personal tutoring.
  4. Examination: Appear for these subject exams at the scheduled time.
  5. Results Compilation: Your improved marks will be integrated with your previous results, culminating in an updated Matric certificate.

Can I Have My Matric Exams Remarked?

If you are not satisfied with your Matric results, do not worry! You have the option of supplementary exams or re-enrolling in specific subjects, offering you another shot at achieving your goals. Pursuing a remarking is also a logical step if you strongly believe there might have been a misjudgment. It is about affirming the hard work and dedication you have invested in your studies.

To apply for a remarking of your Matric results, follow these steps:

  1. Application Submission: Fill out an application for your papers to be re-evaluated, typically available at your school or the exam board.
  2. Fee Payment: A small fee is required for this service, which can be viewed as an investment in validating your academic efforts.
  3. Await Results: Patiently wait while your papers undergo a re-examination.
  4. Receive New Results: Anticipate receiving your adjusted scores, which ideally align more closely with your original expectations.

What Can I Do If I Failed Matric?

Failing matric might seem catastrophic, but it certainly does not mark the end of your prospects of success. There are a number of options available if you have not quite made the Grade 12. Here are some options you can consider:

  • Self-Reflection
  • Re-Marking
  • Supplementary Exams
  • Second Chance Program
  • Re-Do Matric
  • TVET College

Self-Reflection

This involves taking some time to think about your efforts and identify any personal obstacles that might have hindered your studies. It is important to be honest with yourself about whether you gave it your all. If there were personal challenges that made it difficult for you to study, identify these obstacles and seek out the support available to you.

Re-Marking

If you feel you did better than the mark you got, you could apply to have your papers re-marked. This process involves having your examination marked for a second time by a different marker. The cost for re-marking is R120 per subject. However, students who attend no-fee schools may not have to pay application fees.

Supplementary Exams

If you have failed less than 3 subjects, you may apply to write free supplementary exams. The supplementary exams are usually written in May/June.

Second Chance Program

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) offers a “Second Chance Program” which is free. This program provides those who did not pass their matric with an opportunity to do better a second time. The program offers face-to-face classes, online programmes, and television and radio broadcasts.

Re-Do Matric

If you have failed more than two subjects, you could apply at a school or private institution to re-do your matric year. This involves re-enrolling in a school or college and repeating the entire matric year.

TVET College

You could also apply to a TVET College to obtain a National Certificate Vocational, where you can receive a grade 12 equivalent trade-based qualification. TVET colleges offer a variety of courses, many of which address skill shortages in South Africa.
