Janet Hurst-Nicholson
Janet has lived in Durban, South Africa since arriving from England in January 1972. Trained as a bakery technologist, she worked in Research & Development at Bakers Ltd before turning to writing in 1985 when a humorous article was accepted by Femina magazine – which shows you what a dearth of humour there must have been.

When a second article was published by Cosmopolitan magazine she thought she was the new Erma Bombeck. Unfortunately, editors didn’t agree. After receiving a blizzard of rejections, she decided to do a writing course.

This eventually led to her co-writing “Write from The beginning – all you need to know about writing the short story” which was published by The Writing School SA.  She then went on to have short stories and articles published in various local and overseas magazines.

I have learnt such a precious lot from you. I'm carrying on with my writing, and without the foundation you have laid, I wouldn't have had a direction.

"Thank you for the Diploma I've just received. I'm amazed that I've achieved something in life! I've enjoyed doing the assignments, they've opened that little drawer in my mind, and revealed so much that was hidden away all these years".

"I received the Writing School Diploma just after my seventieth birthday and I can assure you it was the best present I have ever received! It was a great challenge to me, but with the help of the Writing School's excellent Blueprint lectures and a wonderful Tutor, I had the necessary inspiration to finish the course. Now that I've learnt to write, it gives me great enjoyment to do something worthwhile. It brings new meaning to life at my age. Thank you very much!"

"I would just like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone involved at the Writing School. I have truly enjoyed doing this course and it is sad that it has come to an end. The amount of knowledge -and experience -that I have gained is invaluable. The whole course is extremely practical and I got so much more out of it, because I had to practice what I had learn. This is a must for any writer who is serious about their career."

"I wish I could have seen your advert a few decades ago! Nevertheless, let's celebrate yet another success. My short story has just won second prize in the Era/Sales House short story competition. Thanks for the emancipation".
